Lost Keys
All keys must be secured at all times and no one may possess more than one key at a time (with the exception of broken keys in locks). Completed Lost/Stolen key reports must be filed with University Safety. If seat keys replacement is thought to be due to a criminal activities, a police report must also be filed. The replacement fee for a stolen lock key is $30 per key, and must be paid to the responsible key holder.
Broken Keys
It's not unusual for keys to break after a few years. If your keys break in the lock, you'll need to replace it. But if the remainder of the key is still in good shape you may be able to fix it.
A paperclip is a great way to hold the broken piece from both sides and push it out. If the broken piece isn't stuck too far within the lock, you can try using a pair pliers. If the key is broken very close to the lock, you may require an "key extraction" tool with an elongated bar with barbs that resemble screws. The bar can be inserted into the lock, and by twisting it you can push the barb into the key to pull it out.
If you have the right tools, it's not difficult to replace the key on a keyboard. You'll require the key cap (the part of plastic that covers the switch), key pad and key retainer clip. Key caps are comprised of either metal or plastic posts that are put into the slots on the switch. To replace a cap on a key take care to take off the internal parts of the key and record the location of them so you can replace them later. You may have to clean the keyboard first with ruby alcohol.
Fobs not working
It may seem absurd that your key fob needs routine maintenance, however they can stop working at any moment. In some instances, the problem is a simple one that is caused by dead batteries. If you've changed the batteries and your fob isn't working, it could be time to look at a different solution.
Another reason for fobs to cease functioning is that the buttons are worn out. When you press the button on your fob, the contacts send coded signals to the receiver inside your car, which communicates the action you want the key do. If the contacts on your key fob are damaged or damaged, you might not be in a position to press the button or transmit a different message than the one you wanted.
A possible quick fix for this problem is to use a physical key to unlock your car's door or start the engine. You can also reset the fob using the procedure in your vehicle's owner's manual (check online for instructions for your particular model).
If changing the batteries and reprogramming your key fob aren't helping you, you may need to replace it or have it repaired. Modern keys must be programmed to match your vehicle's specific Vehicle Identification Number and certain mistakes or wear-and-tear can cause the programming to be corrupted.
Transponder Chips
The transponder chip in your car keys is an important component of the key. They send out the signal using a unique frequency when the key is placed in the ignition, the device in the car then recognizes the code and is aware that it's you. The engine won't start if the device inside the car doesn’t recognise the signal. This is a security measure that was designed to stop thieves from hot wiring their cars and stealing them.
The chip isn't powered by a battery, which means it does not require charging or replacement. It does however need to be programmed to the car by someone with access to the car's ECU and that's why it's important to take your key to a locksmith.
There are many kinds of transponder chips on the market, with the most popular being Rolling Code and Crypto. Key blanks are constructed of plastic with slots for the glass ampoule/transponder. It is then placed into a sleeve, or carrier on the side (or bow) of the key. You can see a photo of one of these sleeve-carriers from an Ford key here. By using a PVC pipe cutter, or another method, you are able to remove the sleeve off of a damaged Ford key.
A normal transponder key is more expensive than a traditional metal key because of the chip but is less expensive than a fob, or smart key. The cost of these key will depend on the vehicle's make and model.
